Learn how to make your library programs and materials accessible to patrons and employees with disabilities.

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA, 1990) , public Libraries are required to make their programs and services accessible to all. There is much more to accessibility than just having a ramp and an elevator. All library staff, from custodial to Director, play a role in ensuring that the public library is useable and enjoyable by all, including people with disabilities.

          Topics to be discussed:

  •         Understanding “What is a Disability”
  •         Disability Awareness Training
  •         Appropriate/Professional Language
  •         Budgeting for Accessibility
  •         Creating and Accessible Environment
  •         Creating Materials in Accessible Formats
  •         What is a Service Animal
  •         Inclusive Emergency Planning
  •         Benefits of access to library services and employment to people with disabilities
  •         Accessible options for accessing library resources
