Please join SCLS Outreach Services for the second meeting of the newly formed HATLO (Healthcare Awareness Through Library Outreach) Committe.

The HATLO committe brings together representatives from various county agencies, non-profit organizations and libraries, to discuss effective methods of sharing up-to-date healthcare information through our public libraries. The group will also focus on all aspects of Health Literacy and how to create a health literate society. Only when people understand related information, can they benefit from it.

The first stop when looking for information (of any kind) is the public library. By having up-to-date information and resources for healthcare related issues and topics, we will be able to provide our patrons with the resources they need. Perhaps you were with us on June 22nd, when we held the first of our Healthcare Collaboration Programming Events with librarians from the Health Science Library at Stoney Brook Hospital. We have another "collaborative" event scheduled for April 11, 2017, which will focus on health related resources for parents, children and young adults.

Please note: The goal of this group is NOT to have library staff answering health related questions, but rather to be able to guide patrons to the most  appropriate sources (of which there are new and many every day). This venture will also help public libraries in collection development meet the need of a diverse health community.

We are pleased to have representatives from Stony Brook Hospital, the Health Science Library at Stony Brook, the Riverhead County Jail, the Suffolk Care Collaborative, the Long Island Health Collaborative, the Department of Health Services (services for both seniors and children with special needs), the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project. These people, along with you (representatives from our public libraries), will help to gather the most relevant resources that will help the broadest number of people.
