Our libraries’ mission is to serve everyone. Families with young children are a big part of that everyone. We want families to feel so welcomed, so helped, and so inspired that when they leave our libraries, they can’t wait to come back! That’s where you come in. In the library, we have people who focus on working with kids, so it’s easy to think that your job doesn’t have anything to do with families. But the truth is, even though your workday might not be entirely focused on young children and families, everyone in the library serves families! We want everyone who interacts with our families make them feel welcome. The better library experience parents have, the more they’ll value the library, vote up our budgets and support our services. Best of all, the more families with young children visit and enjoy our libraries, the stronger those little brains will grow! Families with young children need our libraries. What can you do to help all families belong? One answer is to send your non-children’s services staff to one of our upcoming Everyone Serves Families with Young Children trainings (created by the Ready to Read at New York Libraries Initiative), which will be held on Thursday, September 14th at Lindenhurst Memorial Library and Monday, October 2nd at SCLS. Attendees will leave feeling more educated and more empowered about the importance of their role in creating a positive impact on families in your communities.
