Event Details

People often have lots of questions about service animals. How does the ADA apply when a patron is accompanied by a service animal at the library? How does the ADA define "service animal"? What can I ask if I doubt someone’s dog is a service animal? Should you have policies and procedures in place when service animals are present? What about emotional support and therapy animals? Join us for this webinar to explore how the ADA applies to service animals and what that means for the Suffolk County Library System, for patrons, and for the general public. We will also discuss other types of assistance animals that are not covered under the ADA's service animal regulations.

Our presenters: Joe Zesski is the Program Manager of the Northeast ADA Center and has served as the New Jersey affiliate of the Northeast ADA through Resources for Independent Living since 2009. Mr. Zesski's focus has been on assistive technology, accessible web design, the educational rights of students with disabilities, and the full inclusion of people with disabilities in the community. Joe served for fourteen years as Chair of Burlington County New Jersey’s Disability Issues Committee and currently serves on the New York State’s Hearing Loss Associations Professional Advisory Committee and the New Jersey State Rehabilitation Council. As an individual who is blind, Joe believes that his personal experience of disability informs his professional work.

Jennifer Perry is the Access Specialist for the Northeast ADA Center. Jennifer has worked in the accessibility field for over twenty-five years providing ADA training and technical assistance to architects, code officials, businesses and other stakeholders nationwide.  She previously worked for United Spinal Association in both Government Relations and Compliance roles. She is certified by the International Code Council (ICC) as an Accessibility Specialist/Plans Examiner and is a certified ADA Coordinator.
