Librarians have always helped patrons find credible information and today the ability to assist them seems to be growing in importance. Claims of expertise, rumors, political agendas, foreign propaganda, medical cures and paths to a perfect life seem to beckon at every click of the mouse!

As it becomes harder for many people to recognize reliable resources, we must be prepared with various strategies to help patrons discern reliable information from commercial, political, scientific, and creative sources in the media and on social networks.

This course will offer strategies for identifying credible resources, recognizing deceptive commercial practices, checking rumors, and handling conflicting sources. It will include suggestions for quick guidance tactics for helping your patrons and  for teachable moments at the reference desk.
