Human Trafficking education for community members

Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery and involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain labor or commercial sex. Every year, millions of men, women, and children are trafficked in countries around the world. This crime is not just happening in other countries. It is happening in the United States as well. We don’t often think closer to home, Americans trafficked by Americans. It is happening right here in your backyards and neighborhoods. The victims could be your neighbor, children’s classmates or your niece or nephew.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is working to bring awareness and messaging about the heinous crime to the members of the community. It is the members of the community that are the eyes and ears. The medical workers, educators and people working to serve the community. The more we all know about the dangers, signs and how to report, the better chance we have at helping someone recover or saving someone from falling prey.

The Sheriff’s Anti-Trafficking Initiative which was formally established as a division of the Sheriff’s Intelligence Bureau in 2019, has been pioneering the campaign against human trafficking from a correctional standpoint. S.A.T.I. works in collaboration with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies by developing and sharing the intelligence gleaned from the correctional facility. The unit refers the victims and works closely with victim service organizations in efforts to assist them on their road to recovery and support them throughout their long-term journey as survivors. In addition, S.A.T.I has been working toward sharing their knowledge in effort to educate law enforcement, youth, parents, and community members on the fundamentals of human trafficking, how to recognize and report it.
