Event Details

This is a new educational training on trauma-informed de-escalation designed for librarians, front of house library staff and security staff.

Please note: While this training will be valuable to all library staff, it is particularly geared to those who spend the majority of their time working directly with patrons, on the service desk and working as security staff.

In this course, offered in partnership with Stony Brook University School of Social Welfare, participants will learn and practice new skills to de-escalate patron crisis using case examples and role plays.

Leah Topek-Walker, DSW, LCSW-R, renowned for her work as an innovator and educator in Library Social Work, has designed this course and will serve as instructor.

Space is limited with just 30 seats – at this time we ask that no more than one attendee from any library register for the training.

Participants will improve their de-escalation and teamwork skills, learn about research-based, real-world tools to apply in action, and practical skills to help keep our libraries safe for everyone.

Participants will also be surveyed pre- and post training, in order to improve this pilot curriculum.
